Summer Stroll

Exhibition Overview

In celebration of the hot summer months, The Stroll Gallery is pleased to present the group exhibition <Summer Stroll> from August 16 to September 14. This exhibition showcases the diverse artistic practices of five Korean female artists - Woojung Ghil, Suyeon Kim, Duri Baek, Lee Na, and Jiyoon Jeong.

Woojung Ghil's abstract paintings embody the resilience of nature and the inherent tranquility of the human spirit, evoking the beauty of the natural landscape through the theme of 'jeongjeok' (a Korean word meaning 'silence'). Suyeon Kim's delicate glass drawings capture the small, fleeting moments of everyday life, sensitively expressing the hidden narratives and emotions that lie within. Duri Baek's paintings explore the traces of human existence through the play of light and shadow on leaves, conveying meditative reflections on life through the colors of green and yellow. Lee Na's works fuse traditional and contemporary techniques and imagery, using vibrant seasonal symbols to evoke the memories of childhood. Jiyoon Jeong's paintings illuminate the diverse figures of modern society through the use of softly undulating shades of blue.

Together, these five artists' distinct voices and perspectives offer visitors a rich and multifaceted experience of the summer season. Through this exhibition, The Stroll Gallery invites you to immerse yourself in the diverse artistic visions of these five Korean female artists. Each work promises to imbue the summer months with a refreshing sense of wonder, inspiration, and personal resonance. The Stroll Gallery hopes that all who experience this exhibition will have the chance to take a contemplative summer stroll, with a deepened appreciation for the power of art to illuminate the extraordinary within the ordinary.

Woojung Ghil(b.1992)

Woojung Ghil is a painter based in the United Kingdom. She graduated from Camberwell College of Arts and Cambridge School of Visual and Performing Arts (CSVPA), and is currently completing a Master's degree in painting at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in the UK. Recently, she has been expanding her artistic activities by participating in various exhibitions and art fairs across Europe and Asia, including London, Venice, Seoul, and Beijing. Her works are primarily inspired by the tranquility of mountains, water, and the resilient spirit inherent in nature. Through introspective and self-reflective practices, she strives to reach deep within herself and create artworks that depict ideal and serene transcendental spaces.

Suyeon Kim(b.1989)

Suyeon Kim is a Korean glass artist who uses glass as her primary medium for creating drawing-based works inspired by personal experiences. She pursued studies in ceramics, glass, and printmaking at Hongik University, and later completed her graduate studies in glass at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the United States. She has participated in various residency programs both in Korea and abroad, including the Icheon Ceramic Foundation's Cerapia Creation Workshop, the Yeosu Gyeonggi Craft Creation Support Center, the Pilchuck Glass School in the United States, and Wheaton Arts. Currently, she runs her studio called "Damdam Studio" located in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, and works as a lecturer in the ceramics and glass department at Hongik University, as well as in the craft design department at Cheongju University.

Duri Baek(b.1984)

Duri Baek explores the coexistence of two opposing elements such as boundaries and attention, concealment and exposure, chance and intention, light and darkness. She uses the forms of plant shadows and light as materials to express ways of living. The artist paints Monstera leaves that have split or holes, as they allow light to reach the lower leaves evenly. She suggests that the holes that were once gnawing at her body have now become a means to endure and receive light. From this starting point, she expands the narrative of light and plants. Through the various forms of shadows created as plants unfurl their leaves to receive light, her works capture the processes of life.

Lee Na(b.1986)

Lee Na graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Western Painting from Gacheon University and a Master's degree in Art & Space from Kingston University London. She uses traditional Korean materials such as han-ji (Korean paper) and ink, as well as oriental paints, which she says allow for rich expression in her work. She has held 7 solo exhibitions and participated in about 20 group exhibitions. In 2020, she was selected for projects funded by the Seongnam Cultural Foundation and the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation.

Jiyoon Jeong(b.1994)

Jiyoon Jeong, based in South Korea, presents artwork that embodies the sensory characteristics of found images collected from the web, rendered in a monotone style. While representing traditional genres of painting, Jeong seeks to transcend conventional interpretations by incorporating image distortions to achieve an abstract quality. Holding a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Contemporary Art from Daegu University, she is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Painting at Hongik University Graduate School. Her pieces have been featured in various solo and group exhibitions, as well as art fairs, across multiple cities such as Seoul, Daegu, and Busan. Notably, in 2019, she took part in the Daegu Gachang Creation Studio Residency program.
